Annette Orangio, Patient Simulation Specialist, and Keith Samuels, Executive Director, attended the five day course Practical Research Skills for Simulation Educators on March 2-6 at the University of Miami Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education. The course covered the fundamental principles for conducting simulation-based educational research. The participants received training in formulating research questions and designing simulation studies; searching and evaluating the healthcare literature; organizing and managing data and preparing for statistical consultation; measuring simulation outcomes with reliability and validity; implementing simulation program evaluation and evaluation research; evaluating published simulation education research; and designing a personal simulation education research project. The course directors were Barry Issenberg, MD, Pamela Jefferies, DNS, RN, and William McGaghie, PhD.
The course was conducted in association with the American Association of Medical College's (AAMC) Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) program. The MERC program is intended to provide the knowledge necessary to understand the purposes and processes of medical education research, to become informed consumers of the medical education research literature, and to be effective collaborators in medical education research. Participants who successfully completed the course will be awarded a MERC certificate from the AAMC.
